Prevention of gender related violence against women
Project brief description:
The project is designed to reduce the prevalence of gender related violence against women in the poorest communities of Addis Ababa , Addis ketema Sub city kebele 14/21. The project is targeting more than 20,000 populations, through integrated preventing strategies at the grassroots level with the involvement of the beneficiaries and the local/community institutions, with the view to improve women’s status.
Project Duration: 3 years (October 2006-September 2009)

Major Achievement
The level of awareness of people particularly women in the project area is getting improved in regard to women violence and abuse protection. As a result of paralegal and other awareness raising trainings many of the people are bringing forward individual cases of violence to MCDP and Women Advising Group/ WAG(Influential women from the community). By now, WAG members are playing advisory role besides handling women issues by themselves. In the localities, the WAG is trying to play a watchdog role for women rights.

Case I
A 7 years old girl who lives with her aunt in Kebele 24 had been brutally bitten by her aunt on daily basis. The girl is attending her education in a non- formal program of MCDP. During her class, she could not attend the class attentively due to the fact that she used to worry too much with her living situation. In addition to this, she was not given food and she was highly engage in daily chore. These situations got worse and worsen. Two members of WAG, who have been following the matters tried to solve the problem through discussion and advice but their attempt was failed due to unwillingness of the woman. Therefore, they decided to report the case to MCDP. After that, the woman was called to MCDP and thorough discussion was made with the women in relation to the right of little girls and legal punishment of violating these rights. Finally, the woman understood the situation and burst with tears and she promised to take care of the girl. As the result, the girl is now in better condition.
Case II

A woman, 35 years old, and a mother of 3 children who lives near to the target area had tried to commit suicide. Fortunately, a member of WAG saw the women and convinced her to consult MCDP to deal with her problem. After that, an intensive discussion and counseling service was conducted in order to reduce her psychological trauma and identify her problem. As the result her problem found to be economic. MCDP's partime legal expert from (EWLA) Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association considered her problem and brought her to one NGO which is supporting women who have faced gender based violence by providing shelter service. Finally, the woman has got shelter for herself and her children.
